Brief History of the Museum

The roots of the MANN trace to the reign of Charles of Bourbon (from 1734), who promoted excavations at the Vesuvian cities and brought to Naples the rich Farnese collections inherited from his mother, Elisabeth Farnese. His son Ferdinand IV consolidated these holdings in the current late-16th-century building—formerly a cavalry barracks and, from 1616 to 1777, the city’s university.

From 1777, the complex underwent major renovations directed by architects Ferdinando Fuga and Pietro Schiantarelli. After the French decade (1806–1815), it was renamed the Real Museo Borbonico and housed various royal institutes (library, academy, and papyrus workshop). In 1860, it became the National Archaeological Museum. With the transfer of the picture gallery to Capodimonte in 1957, the building assumed its present identity as a premier archaeological museum.
